How the Native Americans and Roger Williams became friends

Blank...

what i felt about the city

idea - a wall with a crack,
a wall - a metaphor for a solid piece of history,
the crack or hole - is the part of the history that doesn't feel right

a loop animation , where the character is constantly braking the wall in attempts to look on what's on the other side of the wall, but is faced with more walls.(this is my metaphor for the apocryphal history)

Impressions of Providence

The wealth of Providence

After the last class/walk with Peter when he talks about the economy of Providence, I decided to use his speach to introduce in someway the ideas of the wealth production and surplus concept... a revelation about our place in Providence as visitors?

The video is available here. (Why I used OGG Theora-Vorbis format file? Read this)

The animation is in Public Domain. The draws are made with Inkscape (some of them based on photos of Inka), the animation with Synfig Studio. All the stuff (editable files) can be download from this link.

Reflections about the city

First I was amazed by this place, but couple of weeks went by and the shine of the city faded. I have had great times and not so great times here. Overall its been great.

  • Psychogeography is a strategy for people to create a new pattern to investigate.
  • Human experience can be written onto a landscape.
  • Designers and artists think of interventions.
  • The history of Providence has no relationship with the people that lived here, its not entirely true or false.
  • Home to some people is senses experienced together.
  • 'I am kino-eye,I am mechanical eye,I ,a machine show you the world as only I can see it.my path leads to the creation of a fresh perception of the world i decipher in a new way,a world unknown to you.'-Dziga Vertov 1923.
  • To whom much is given much is expected.
  • History is a way of looking at the past.
  • Decay is beautiful but not necessary.
  • 'The power of the game of life is that no matter how simple the rules are,one cannot predict what will happen to a colony in any given situation, neither for the immediate nor for the future. The only way to find out what will happen is to execute the program.'John Conway's 'Game of Life'

NYT story on Catholocism in American Public Life

The New York Times today has an interesting story that looks at the history of anti-Catholic sentiments in American public life. Given some of the ideas that I shared in my lectures the past few days, I thought some of you might be interested in the perspectives presented here: http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/07/23/is-anti-catholicism-dead/index.html?hp

scattered emotions

Sixteen days ago I could not speak in any other language but English,Swahili and Luhya (native language).I can now at least brag to my friends back at home that i know some Korean,Arabic,Spanish e.t.c.Please don't come asking me what words I have learnt because the truth is,I may not have a clue.We all arrived with some level of naivety either to perceptions of life or just not knowing what to expect.Looking back now,I realize that was a good place to be.

We have all learnt all this languages, not in speaking but in cooperating,in sharing skills,in living. The fact that we co-exist should show us success is inevitable if pursuit and determination are in place. We have learnt to compromise without being compromised. What I mean to say is that fusionists do inspire me....am determined to pass on the blaze to others. You guys rock!

Studio Work
Due Friday, 25 July, 3 PM

A. Investigate Psychogeography
• http://www.artinruins.com/
• http://affinityproject.org/groups/internationalpsycho.html
• Look for more….

B. Undertake psychogeographic experiments and investigate the city in three ways:
1. Create a digital media piece that coveys what you feel from the city
2. Create a digital media piece that assumes you are in conversation with someone who lived here more than 100 years ago.
3. Post to the blog your field notes -- that is your reflections about the city since arriving and during this process.

C. Post your pieces to our blog: http://risdfusionarts2008.blogspot.com/
